About The SCGS Foundation
OUR STORY
The South Carolina Girls State (SCGS) Foundation was founded in 2022 to strengthen and sustain the legacy of leadership built through the American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State (ALA PGS) program.
What began as a small group of dedicated alumnae and supporters has grown into a statewide movement committed to ensuring that every young leader in South Carolina has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of civic education, leadership development, and sisterhood that ALA PGS provides.
Through fundraising, partnerships, and alumni engagement, the SCGS Foundation provides the financial and community support necessary to keep the ALA Palmetto Girls State program thriving for generations to come.
About ALA Palmetto Girls STATE
Since its inception in 1947, the American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State has brought together rising high school seniors from across South Carolina for a week-long, immersive experience in government, public service, and leadership. Delegates form cities and political parties, run for office, and learn firsthand how democracy works — all while developing confidence, civic understanding, and lifelong friendships.
Many alumnae go on to become educators, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders who credit ALA PGS with inspiring their passion for leadership and service. The SCGS Foundation proudly exists to ensure that this life-changing opportunity remains accessible to every deserving delegate.
Programs & Impact
The SCGS Foundation invests directly in the success of delegates and the long-term sustainability of the American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State (ALA PGS) program through the following focus areas:
Delegate Scholarships
We believe finances should never be a barrier to leadership. Each year, the Foundation provides scholarships that cover tuition, meals, housing, and registration fees for delegates who might not otherwise be able to attend.
Program Enhancements
To enrich the ALA PGS experience, the Foundation helps fund essential program materials, supplies, and participant resources — ensuring delegates have everything they need to learn, lead, and grow throughout their week at Girls State.
Alumnae Engagement
Our alumnae are at the heart of our mission. We keep our community connected through updates, stories, and fundraisers that celebrate the impact of ALA Palmetto Girls State—and we’re working to expand opportunities for alumnae to reconnect and support.
Leadership Development Initiatives
ALA Palmetto Girls State provides a foundation for lifelong leadership. While we currently focus on the flagship summer program, we plan to expand into alumni-led workshops, community projects, and other opportunities that continue the Girls State legacy year-round.
